Hey There Hi There It’s Me

Ultimate Blog Party 2010

Here in our little home, and I mean a little home lives a family, just an ordinary family with one exception it is made up of Grandpa, Grandma, and our precious Granddaughter.

dep_show_line_item6How did this come to be? Some of you know the story while some of you do not and you have been so kind or scared to ask. I have not shared our story with you in this sort of way, but decided to come out (no not the closet) but just share how we became a family.

Our daughter who is 27 yrs old, is developmentally delayed, I don’t have any other term to describe her disabilities, since it was caused from the cord being wrapped around her neck 3 times at birth cutting off the oxygen supply to her brain. She never seems to make good choices, and well, let’s just say right down lazy. She wasn’t raised that way, believe me, she has the skills to take care of herself and a home and yes even a family but she chooses NOT to.

Anyway she met a man, who is not of a good character, got married and then ended up pregnant. Our first instinct was to try to teach her a hard lesson knowing that the State would take the baby and let her try to jump through the hoops to maybe learn from the experience, but then our hearts leaped a thousand miles high and we couldn’t help the feeling by doing so we might never get our grandchild nor know what ever became of him/her.

We persuaded Mom to come and move in with us in hopes by getting away from this man who ruled her every being, and told her how to think, talk, you name it he dictated her every move, then having this child, that she would decide just how important the child was and stay and help raise her. To assure that the baby would stay with us, we hired an attorney and got permanent custody of the baby.

Well, as it worked out after the baby was born our daughter in her lazy way decided the baby was too much work, and left our residency to return to the man or father of the child.

There you have it this is how we became our little family in this little house.

If I win, I would like:

  3. What a story. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm sure it wasn't easy- but knowing this background just adds to your witness of all that God has done in your lives and Selena's. He's been watching out for Selena from the git-go! I am sorry to hear that your daughter is having such a rough time of it. Blessings on you my friend!

  6. Hi. I'm in a (very) small home too, though I'm not raising a grandchild. I would if I had to someday, though, because that's what we do. I've known people who were raising grandchildren while "mom" was running around drinking and gambling. Not the situation they thought they'd be in at this point in their lives, for sure. Great to meet you!

  7. I am still considering whether to join UBP. Another blog post to write :) On the other hand, it's a good opportunity to meet new blogs. Good luck on winning prizes :)

  11. I cannot imagine the trials you have been through because as a parent, you want what is best for your child. Thank goodness you have your granddaughter, because you know she is in a safe environment. It is sad how some parents pick abusive spouses over their children.

  16. I'm so glad to have met you.
I have 2 special needs kids (28 & 16). Plus a gifted child (18). All boys. The hardest one right now is our 28 yro who has been in and out of our home. At present he is in. No matter what we try to do for him he takes advantage of us. At present he is trying to get SSDI. He was turned down, although Voc Rehab says he needs to get a lawyer & fight it because according to the SSDI Dr. he is eligible.
Anyhoo, here I am visiting from *UBP 2010* Have a great weekend.

  46. Stopping by from the UBP! :-) When my twins were 18 months old, my husband's ex basically abandoned my stepkids (she seemed to feel she was done raising them even though they were just 13 and 15 years old at the time)... that was almost 4 years ago and they have been living with us ever since. So, definitely know the struggles of unexpectedly having to raise someone else's children...

I'm kind of blog-hopping right now, but following you so I can be sure to come back later! :-D

  48. I know 3 girls who are the same as your daughter. They left their children with their parents and continued to make wrong decisions. I tell my friend's mom this and I will say it to you too; she will eventually realize what she's missing.

My oldest daughter's father was the same way. He brain washed and manipulated me. He almost took me away from my family and my friends because of the way he had me thinking. Some men are just VERY good at that. I wised up before I ended up married to him, thank God... But my daughter is great not having him in her life. He wasn't a good person.

Stopping by from the Ultimate Blog Party!! Following your blog now! Hopefully you can stop by mine and follow as well! Have a great weekend!

  62. Just wanted to say hello. You are a great person for raising a little one. My mom and dad also raise my half-sister's two children. As I read your story, so many things rang true about my half-sis as well. My niece is now 6 and my nephew is 10, and they have lived with my parents since my niece was born. It's a tough road, but also very rewarding. As a social worker, I cannot thank you enough for raising this beautiful little girl and not allowing her to slip through the system.

  69. I'm NOT here for the UBP, just being nosy!:) I have to admit, I was a bit curious as to how Selena came to live with you. I can't imagine how difficult it is to watch your child make such poor choices. People do mess up and it's so hard to see. I pray that your relationship with your daughter is restored. In the meantime, Selena is so fortunate to have you caring for her! You are amazing. Blessings!:)
