Tonsillectomy

We took Selena back into the ENT Specialist on Wednesday. At that point she her left tonsil had now become enlarged as well, and she was sounding like her adenoids were beginning to get infected, so the ENT simply said it was time to take them out. We could have waited until after Christmas but Selena insisted we get it done on Friday. I guess I don’t blame her she had only been sick with this since October.

At first it didn’t look like the ENT was going to do anything, but then we reminded him that Selena only had the one Kidney, (you can read on this here) we were concerned that this ongoing infection would eventually start affecting her in other ways if not that one kidney. While the kidney has always been healthy, we know the risks of damaging it. We were relieved when the ENT finally started taking our concerns a little more seriously.

Friday morning we woke up and headed to the hospital by 6:45 a.m. to be there by our 8:00 check in. Selena was so brave through the whole time and when she thought we were going the wrong way, even commented, “I thought we were going to the hospital, not turning around to go back home.”

The picture above is of Selena before the procedure. They had given her some medication to help her relax, yes, she was pretty relaxed. It was hardly an hour when her doctor appeared to let us know everything went well. The tonsils were more enlarged then he imagined, though the adenoids didn’t look nearly as bad as he had thought.

Upon getting home, Selena was very good about keeping her fluid intake up as well as wanting to eat. She did get sick once, and figured out she probably should slow down on eating a bit, but still had yet another small bowl of ice cream and a pudding. The hardest thing for her was having to stay down on the couch, we had to keep reminding her why she needed to stay down.

I was very proud of her for being so brave, and even with all the new and scary things around her, she cooperated very well. We look forward to her bouncing back to her normal happy and healthy self as we proceed on into the New Year.

  2. She looks so sweet there in her half asleep drugged state. I hope she enjoys her unlimited ice cream and popsicles while she can :)
