Food Groups

DSCF0621
Since Selena has really been into playing with her pretend food, I thought it would be fun to discuss food groups. I took index cards and labeled them with the different groups, fruits & vegetables, grains, meats, dairy, and sweets. Selena’s job was to sort through her basket of pretend food and place the foods next to the right index card.

We then went through the kitchen and got a few real foods and she had to figure out which group they belonged in. She discovered that while she finds yogurt to be sweet and tasty that it falls in the dairy category, then if we consider the fruit that is in it, that she is getting a great fruity, dairy, sweet treat!

It was fun to see that Selena understood the concept of eating out each of the food groups, well the healthy food groups, and that the sweet food group is what we get as an award when we do so (or anyway that is the way it works in our home.) She also discovered that many of the sweet treats that we buy for her actually are good foods.

  1. This is a fun activity. Anna is very fascinated with potatoes which is falling into starches even though it is a vegetable.

  2. My kids like to point out food groups on their plates. Sorry I haven't been here, we were so sick.
