We decided to take a look at our new curriculum yesterday. I really didn’t have much planned but thought we would at least take a peak into what we would be doing, and do some brainstorming as to what direction we would like to move in. One of the things I like about our new curriculum is that it is a very basic curriculum, not a lot of stuff that we would never use. It is basic phonics and building reading skills. I am free to supplement it with anything or any unit study that sounds like fun to study.
I thought this was one of the best pictures of Selena, she looked so happy and grown up sitting at her desk with her workbook waiting for us to begin.
Once we began to work, Selena quickly tried very hard to practice her handwriting. The one thing we did have to discuss was that she has to work the workbook in order and not pick and choose the pages she feels looks easier. She quickly said “The handwriting is going to be hard to learn!” I explained it seems hard right now but with practice it will get easier, and assured her if she just hangs in there and tries and practices it will soon be as easy as reading is.
What did we brainstorm? For some reason Selena’s interest in animals and questions about certain animals has led us to leave our State study. We will be taking a trip through books, and internet resources on Australia. I don’t know how long we will be in Australia, or how many different animals we will study but since she is learning to write the letter a, it seems like a perfect country to start in.
This doesn’t even begin to touch on the other materials we have in our new curriculum. We took a quick look at those as well. Selena is very excited, a little concerned about the handwriting issue, but excited all the same.
I am really curious now what your new curriculum is.
ReplyDeleteShe really does look grown up! You guys are going to have a lot of fun this year.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that Selena is so excited. I hope she will enjoy her studies. Anna absolutely adores school and never seems to be bored there. It's going better than I thought :)
