My Quiz

Selena and I have been studying quite a bit about many different animals here lately. Today since I didn’t feel much like teaching, I asked Selena to pick one of the animals we have been learning about and give me a quiz or test. She picked the crocodiles.

My Quiz administered by Selena

  1. Where do crocodiles lay their eggs? and Why?
  2. What other reptile lays their eggs along side the crocodiles eggs?
  3. What animals are threats to the crocodiles eggs?
  4. What determines if an crocodiles will be a boy or a girl?
  5. How does the baby  crocodiles let the mommy know they have hatched so she can dig them up?
  6. What does she do with them after they have hatched?
  7. What does she do with the other babies who have hatched in the nest?
  8. What is one animal that will attack an crocodiles?

As you can see her questions were pretty deep. Did she know all the answers? You bet she did! Did I know all the answers? Let’s just say she gave me a lot of check marks for right answers. Are you curious to know the answers? Well, here they are:

  1. Crocodiles lay their eggs in holes or piles of leaves, their eggs are always buried for protection and warmth while they incubate.
  2. The soft shell turtle is one reptile who will lay their eggs in the same nest as the  crocodiles eggs, because they know they will be safe there.
  3. A lot of animals and reptiles are threats to the eggs, such as lizards, and beavers.
  4. Since crocodiles have no chromosome that determines the sex, the temperature during incubation determines the sex. If the nest is very warm above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the babies will be male. If the nest is lower then that the babies will be female.
  5. From the time the first baby crocodiles hatches he/she starts chirping, this does two things, tells the others it is time to hatch, as well as to let mom know to come and dig them up.
  6. After she has dug up her babies, she carries them in her mouth pouch to the water where she guards them until they are ready to be on their own.
  7. She also carries the baby turtles in her mouth to the water as well.
  8. The one animal that is not afraid to attack an crocodiles and who is a huge threat to crocodiles is the hippopotamus.

I love it when Selena gives me these quizzes, it really shows me that she enjoyed our study, that she paid attention, and that she retained all that we have learned.

  2. When I taught 8th grade English, the day before a test I used to have the students make up their own tests. Sometimes I used their questions. This was a very effective way for them to study. Now when my kids have to study, I always review with them and then let them quiz me! It works.
