Reading/Grammar

Yesterday when we sat down to work on our reading Selena informed me she was bored with reading. I decided it was time to step it up a bit then and introduce a little Grammar. I took some index cards and on two I wrote the words Noun and Verb. I explained to Selena what a noun was and we proceeded to list as many nouns as she could think of.

We then began to make sentences using these nouns. As she created sentences I wrote each word of the sentence on a different card so that she could build the sentence as she created them. After we had made a few sentences I then introduced what a verb was. Now Selena had to go through and pick out all the verbs and place them under the verb card.

Selena made one discovery on her own, I loved the look on her face when she was thinking this one through.

After some thought she announced that the word lights could be either a verb or a noun. I asked her why that is so, she was a little puzzled at first, then she came off with two sentences using it both as a verb then a noun.

The lamp lights the room.

The lights twinkle in the sky.

We spent the rest of the day with Selena naming as many nouns and verbs as she could possibly think of. I finally asked her if Grandma was a noun? She informed me “No.” I asked her what Grandma was if she wasn’t a noun. She turned and with a huge smile said, “You are a woman.”

By last night though it became all too clear as to why Selena was finding her reading to be boring. Poor thing came down with the tummy flu. It truly scared her, she thought it was her kidney again. I couldn’t figure out why for an hour she kept asking me to call the hospital. I guess maybe I didn’t mention while we were in the middle of our move Selena came down with a UTI. She woke up one morning and I knew right away she wasn’t feeling well, she told me her legs hurt and asked me to carry her back to the couch. She fell sound asleep only to wake up in little bit quite sick. We first thought tummy flu, until she had blood. That was when we took her to ER. They gave her something for her tummy and then discovered the UTI. Poor thing a couple weeks later she had to go in and have an ultrasound to make sure that there had been no scarring. There hadn’t been, no wonder she thought it was her kidney when she first started feeling icky yesterday.

  1. Wow! That must have been a scare. It makes the flu sound a lot better - but I hope she feels better soon.

  2. Oh, the poor little girl. I am glad you found out what was wrong. The grammar lesson was nice and it is amazing that she could determine that lights is a noun and a verb even while she was sick. Give her a hug from all of us, and tell her we are praying that she will be feeling 100% soon.

  3. Oh UTI must have been a scare! Good to know that Selena is feeling well now. We did just a bit on parts of speech - Anna was interested because of the Mad Libs book she ran into.

  5. "Hopping" over to visit from the HHH.

Sorry to hear your little sweetheart had a UTI. Poor darling. I'm glad she's feeling better and I hope that the stomach bug doesn't last too long.

Wow, and what a bright little girl if she was able, at her young age, to determine that "lights" can be a verb and a noun. Awesome work, grandma! :-)

Nice to meet you and many blessings,
    Lisa
