What My Child is Reading

We really had a fun week all the way around, reading was no exception. We read several funny books. The following were three of Selena’s favorite books this week.

While this book can seem a little busy, I felt it was a good book for opening up a discussion on cause and affect as well as sequencing. Selena must have really enjoyed the book, as it was the first book to disappear from my stack.

L M N O peas by Keith Baker is definitely another Alphabet book but unlike what we think of for an alphabet book that we would read with our younger children, this book introduces stronger vocabulary words for each letter. For instance for the letter i, the peas are inventors and investigators, and for the letter p the peas are painters, poets, plumbers, pilots, parachutists, and of course peas. Selena really was engaged and enjoyed hearing “Big words” as she put it as we read through the alphabet. There isn’t really a story line, and is written like most alphabet books, it just uses a larger vocabulary base.

I have seen The Butt Book by Artie Bennett, illustrated by Mike Lester on a few blogs now. After seeing what Chrsty at Superheroes and Princesses had to say in her review of the book, I knew I had to reserve it at our library. We were not disappointed not one bit. From the minute we sat down to read the book, Selena began to laugh. She had just as much fun making fun of the different butts in the book as she did listening to the story. I felt it was a butt book that was written within good taste, while talking about such a subject as butts, I didn’t find really any potty humor. I do however think Papa wondered what I was reading. He too after getting the opportunity to sit down and look the book over had to agree that it is as funny as Selena made it sound.

  1. We just read the Butt Book after reading the reviews and enjoyed it. I think we'll try the Don't Slam the Door next.

  3. I recall that we had Don't Slam the Door, and the illustrations looked cute. I didn't get to read it though :) I think I am going to get LMNO Peas next time - I saw it in the library today. Thanks for joining WMCIR!
