Sunday Science/ Leaf Man

leafman

When we first read Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert the first remark that Selena made was, “Our leaves always blows away.” Based up on her remark, I asked her why she thought this was so. She answered, “I really don’t know.”

I took our basket of dried leaves from our nature hike and piled them in the middle of the table. We marked one leaf as being our Leaf Man with a dried up dandelion for his nose.

Using a small fan, I started blowing the wind on the pile of leaves starting on low and working my way up to high.

100_3642 Selena informed me that on low and medium that her Leaf Man was still there. I asked her what she would think if the fan was on high. She gave her hypothesis that Leaf Man might blow away.

100_3644 First though I let her feel how strong the wind was from the fan.

100_3646 She laughed at the end result and was a little amazed that our entire pile of leaves blew across the table and many landed on the floor. She then looked and was unable to locate her Leaf Man. She concluded that when the wind blows here that all our leaves blow all over town and that is why we don’t usually have very many and that Leaf Man would have a hard time living here.

I am linking this up at Adventures of Mommydum.

  1. That looks like a lot of fun - but one for when the Man of the House is at work :)

  2. Oh man I bet that was fun.

My kids regularly complain about the wind blowing stuff away. We had a nice little corridor of wind here.

  3. I love that she thinks Leaf Man would have a hard time living there because it is windy.

The wind blows all the leave in our neighborhood onto a couple of lots - thankfully not our own! They end up with several feet of leaves on their lawn!

  4. It's a very neat take on the Leaf Man - a wind experiment. It gives me all kinds of ideas about how to make wind...
