What My Child is Reading

 little4

Selena has really began to discover the art of story books. This came as she discovered the My First Little House Books. Natalie at Mouse Grows Mouse Learns reminded me of these first little books in one of her weekly posts. At first Selena was not sure about the books, but then our friends from Fenn Family Adventure visited the Ingalls Wilder Museum in Walnut Grove Minnesota.  As Selena and I read their post about their visit and she was able to see her friends dressed in the pioneer clothing the stories suddenly came to life for Selena.

I pulled out some of my books on Laura Ingalls Wilder and showed her pictures of Laura and the family and explained that these stories were about a little girl just like her. Now she just can’t get enough of the stories. It was my hope to use all the books based on the Big Woods in Wisconsin for our geography lesson, which eventually will become a reality, but in the meantime Selena has just had fun having these stories read to her over and over again. We also read Winter Days in the Big Woods, Christmas in the Big Woods, and Summertime in the Big Woods.

We had other books in the house as well, but those seemed to not be read much except for her Biscuit books, which she is reading totally independently now. She is so funny about her Biscuit books, either she is wanting us to read them to her, or she is telling us “NO, I will read it to you!” The funny thing about our reading now, is that Selena expects every aspect of the book to be read, from the front cover, to the Title page plus the Author and Illustrator, to any credits, to the back of the book. We can’t just sit down and open a book and start reading.

Just for a little update, Thursday evening at church Selena went the extra mile in our expectations of her, while having to sit a little longer before being dismissed for children’s church. On our way home she started begging for kindergarten. She awoke yesterday morning a little tired from the night before, but was excited to get back into her school work, reading lessons, and math. It was nice to see her energy level up, and to see our little girl again. We just hope this is over now, and when we go see the GI specialist they will just confirm that everything is fine now and to just keep an eye on her.

  1. It's been a while since we read the Little House on the Prairie books - we'll have to return to them sometime, so the little ones can enjoy them too.

Glad to hear Selena seems to be feeling better!

  3. Thanks for joining WMCIR. We ended up loving "My First Little House" series. I am thinking of getting them all at once from the library and also having some sort of history/geography lesson on Wisconsin. It's wonderful that Selena feels better and craves school. Anna positively feels better, but couldn't care less about school part :)
