Selena Our Natural Learner

3 years 5 months

Watching you the last month here Selena, you are growing in more ways then just physically. You amaze me everyday with your own self confidence, your sense of humor, your independence, and your maturity. When faced with a challenge that seems just a bit scary, you use all these things to just plunge forward and face your fears. You express yourself with very appropriate language skills, and even body language. By doing this you are over coming your fears in a very healthy way.

I am seeing such a natural learner developing before my eyes. We can take the simplest things and turn it into a learning experience. Like the other day curled up on my lap, you started to put 2 + 2 = 4 together just by adding our eyes, hands, and feet. You said, “I have 2 eyes, you have 2 eyes, we have 4 eyes all together, If Papa were here, he has 2 eyes, then we would have 6 eyes all together,” without hardly any effort. Now that is truly natural learning, the ability to work with what we have and observe everything about it.

Mama has decided that now is the time we will put away all our books, except for reading, and just enjoy learning naturally. Is school over? No, not at all because learning is a 24/7 event. We will take the next several months to just explore and learn all we can through using all our senses. One of my favorite things right now is just watching you learn and watching how natural it comes to you. I love the fact that though you got scared by something the other day, you didn’t cry, you told me how you felt, gave me a huge hug, then proceeded on to overcome your fear, and now you want to go do it again. Now that shows great strength, courage, and a deep sense of security, all the things I had hoped to instill in you.

I love you very much Selena, and am so proud to have you hear with us. I look forward to what the next few months will hold for us together as a family.

  1. What a wonderful post. Selena is such a bright child, and she definitely grows and matures in wonderful ways. I think that it's great that you are ready to let her learn in her own way at her own pace. It will be a magical time for you and her.

  4. Have fun with "unschooling" the next few months - I'm sure it will be a great fit for Selena at this stage! I love her eyes, and hands, and feet addition - she really is a natural.
