Geography/History #10

postcardexchange

TootandPuddle

We have taken this week off in school, I just needed a break. Natalie at Mouse Grows Mouse Learns recommended this book, we were not disappointed.

Toot & Puddle by Holly Hobbie is a cute story about two pigs who are friends. One likes to travel while one likes to stay home. I liked the how while Puddle was on his adventures he sent Toot a postcard from all the places he visited.

We read the book many times, and I must chuckle as the first time we read the book, Selena was trying to pull the postcards off the pages. We then got all of our postcards out and talked a bit on why people send postcards. At first Selena told me that she didn’t know why she had all these postcards.

I explained our little postcard swap with her, and explained that these children and families sent her postcards so she could learn about the places they live. I showed her all the spare postcards we have and discussed how each one shows pictures and describes something about where we live.

This posed the question again, why do people send postcards? Selena now was catching onto the idea, and warmly responded to my answers, that people want to share where they live, where they travel, and instead of a long letter, they want to not only show a picture of where they are but also add a personal short note to say hi.

Selena now sees her postcards as being more then just a piece of mail that arrived on any particular day, but she is now understanding that they came from all over and from all of you, who wanted to share a little bit about where you live with her. I believe sharing this book and taking the time to discuss our postcards, will make her geography track a lot more meaningful to her.

If you have a Geography or History lesson you have done with your children, we would love for you to share it with us. Link your post up below.

  2. What a great way to explain to her!
And as a random note, when you said it was written by Holly Hobbie, all I could think of was the little doll and kept trying to picture that doll writing a book, and laughing.

  3. I am glad that you liked the book! Anna also asked similar questions - she wanted to understand why Toot was sending postcards to Puddle. She was sad that Toot couldn't attend Puddle's birthday and kept asking why he didn't come. I had to use postcards from family members to explain to her how we send postcards to each other when we travel to new places. She caught on and promised to send me one when she goes to Germany.
