This weeks theme for Open Ended Art at Mommies Wise Little Bookworms is feathers. I discovered this morning that I did not save the feathers that Selena and I collected over the Summer, or if I did save them I don’t remember where I stored them.
After doing a little research on the Internet and showing Selena all different pictures of Native American Headdresses, we decided to make our own. I took the colors that Selena chose, orange and brown and cut feathers out of them. At first Selena thought they looked like leaves and was a little disappointed, but once she got to putting her headdress together she changed her mind and decided they did indeed look like feathers.
The idea here was for Selena to use the pattern she made yesterday as a sample to figure out the pattern for her feathers. You can see she put a lot of thought into her pattern:
When she finished gluing these onto her paper, I reinforced her feathers with pipe cleaners. We then let all the glue dry and fit it to her head. Here is her finished project. She had to try it on both ways, with the feathers in back and then in front, and decided that she liked the feathers in front the best!
She could hardly wait for PaPa to get in the door tonight before she was telling him exactly how we made it, pointing out the pipe cleaners, and the staples, and of course her pattern!

ReplyDeleteVery cute! I was thinking about headdress too, but decided that it won't be very open-ended :) Selena's patterns are great - she is a smart little girl.
ReplyDeleteSelena is such a sweety. She looks proud of her creation!
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever idea! I love the picture of her "thinking" with her finger on her mouth - how adorable! It turned out great!!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea. I didn't have any feathers so we didn't join in this week. I loved how you improvised and made it into an activity about patterns.
