stART How The Leaves Came Down

If you haven't figured it out yet, Tuesdays are Poetry Day in our home. This is a time I love to introduce Selena to different poetry from new to old. I really enjoy when I can share the classic poems from when I was growing up. I find a lot of my poetry in many different old books I have from years past. Today's poem came from my favorite classic book, (out of print now) "The Junior Classics" published by Collier. I only used part of the poem for this project since it is a lengthy poem. You can find the poem in its entirety here. I also love being able to share all this with you through stART hosted by A Mommy's Adventure.

How The Leaves Came Down

by Susan Coolidge

I'll tell you how the leaves came down.

The great Tree to his children said:

"You're getting sleepy, Yellow and Brown,

Yes, very sleepy, little Red.

It is quite time to go to bed."

Selena took her basket out to gather leaves.

We are really enjoying this year, since we are actually getting an Autumn. Usually we are into our rainy season and when I say rainy I mean soggy down pours!

I wrote the part of the poem on a piece of poster board and allowed Selena to glue her leaves to the board. As you can tell Selena had a lot of fun with this. She brought home more leaves then we needed so when we were all done she had fun just throwing the leaves in the air and watching them fall down around her feet on the floor.

  1. This is one of my favorite poems. Thanks for reminding me of it, I need to share it with Joe.

I like your idea for this project too. Love what she did with the leaves and her "collage".

  2. That is so great of you to introduce poetry to her so early. She looks like she had fun. Great activity to do at this time of year. You should do some leaf rubbings with the leftover leaves.
