Our Week and Weekend

First our week was spent inside due to the rain. It rained everyday, not enough to cause flooding, but enough to keep everything very wet and cold. We had a couple days of making forts, rediscovering all of our little cars, trucks and trains. Though the weather outside was not the best there was a lot of fun inside.

Selena just continues to move forward in her reading and now I can hardly stump her with words or sentences. It is fun to listen and watch as she breaks new words down and attempts to sound them out. She generally nails them with about a 90% accuracy, very few that I have to help her with. I love the way some words she starts to sound out, and realizes by the time she gets towards the end of the word that it isn’t right, she goes right back to the beginning and starts all over until she gets the word correct. I am not talking easy words either, we are working on words like citation, phobic, hyphen, etc.

We have really been focusing on time and calendars. Selena has been all over checking the time almost every hour, she has to check just about every clock in our home but really likes reading the time off my cell phone since it has the a.m. and p.m. on it as well. She has even started counting by 10’s and 5’s without much assistance or visual aids.

We were thrilled when things dried out enough that we could have our T Ball game on Saturday. We wasn’t sure there would be any games since all the games throughout the week had been cancelled. I was very proud of Selena Saturday, she really is improving in her T Ball skills, and is enjoying the game much more now. She is staying more focused on the field, and is getting better at batting. Now if we can get her to just leave the dirt alone. I didn’t get many pictures from the game, since I helped out in the dugout. Helping the kids to make sure they could find their hats and mitts, or hitting helmets and keeping them where they needed to be until it was time for them to go. Normally this is not something I do, but since there was only one team mom this week, I just stepped in to help out. It has its benefits but also it’s down side as well, since your so busy you miss a lot of the game.

Thank you to all who sent well wishes on my last post. It has been difficult but it really appears as though our daughter will lose her son to the State. We were asked to take him in. For as hard as it was we had to say no. We offered to help our daughter out so that maybe she could keep him but when this met with resistance on her part, we had to let it go. I am however talking with foster/adopt families in Spokane and am happy that the State is allowing me to have some say as to which home he could be placed in.

Another huge issue for us this week, well it has been on our mind for a few months now, was should we try Selena in school or continue to homeschool. I sometimes wonder with her being an only child if she should go to school. I even went as far as to fill out the registration forms, though I never have turned them in. After talking to quite a few people who do public school their children, and are now working with Selena through different activities including T Ball, and hearing them tell me, “You can not send that girl to school, she would get way too bored with as highly bright as she is, and would probably just end up in trouble.” Hearing this from mom’s who have their kids in our public school system, has drilled it home yet again that we need to continue just what we are doing. I might start next fall paying for a half day of daycare though, as it would be nice just to have the opportunity to spend some time with other woman my age. We will see.

I have to tell you though, a neighbor who has really taken to the family, and has been so kind, went out and purchased an entire box of books, brand new math books from 1st grade through 6th grade, along with history books, science books and a couple of complete reading and phonics books. I am so grateful for his kindness.

  1. I am so sorry that your grandson has to be in foster care. I am sorry, too, about your worries about Selena being an only child. I am hoping and praying that everything works out the best for all of you.

  2. It's awesome that your neighbor is so kind and helps out with books. On the subject of schools, as you know, I am in an opposite camp. I was also very worried about Anna being bored, but she is not bored at all. She absolutely loves everything about school despite the fact that even in the first evaluation of the year she tested out of K curriculum. Of course, a lot depends on the teacher and classmates, but I have no regrets so far about sending her to a public school. Perhaps you could at least try it out and see how Selena does. You could always change your mind if it doesn't work.

  3. I am sorry to hear about your grandson. I know you had hopes for your daughter this time around. I won't give you advice about Selena's school, because I'm sure you'll be able to trust your own feelings when it comes to her - you've done a great job with her so far - and you have the entire summer to consider and pray about what's right. There's nothing wrong with stopping to consider how your life would be different if she was in school - we all do that from time to time :)

  4. This has been my first chance to sit down and be able to type a proper response. I didn't want to just type in a quick "praying for you," but wanted to really love on you, because I know you're hurting now.

In order of it all: I know you heart is aching for your grandson, and you wish you could do something to make it all better. I am so proud to know you and your caring heart. You are always looking how to help, and I"m sure you will help find a wonderful foster home for your grandson.

I agree with Leah, i think we all have those times when we want to just throw in the towel and put them all back in public school, but I just have to look at the pictures you put up here to know that she is thriving and loving life. What will you do with all the time you'll get once she's in the half day daycare? You'll get the best of both worlds. A little bit of time by yourself and lots of time with Selena!

  5. Oh no, google ate my big long comment....... I didn't get a chance to get to the computer for a couple of days and I wanted to give a nice long comment to this post, not a quick "praying for you." In case google decides to eat it again I'm going to copy it...........

In order of all of this: I am so proud to know you and call you a friend. I know how much you are hurting over your daughter not being able to keep him, and how much you really wanted it to work. I'm so impressed that you're taking the time to help find him a foster home even if you can't take him in. I know you'll help find him a loving home.

I agree with Almost Unschooling, we all have those moments we're not sure we've made the right decision, but I only have to look at Selena's pictures to know you're doing a great job! But, if it's the right time to put her in public school you'll have a peace about it, and you'll know when it's right. I can't wait to hear what you decide to do with the free time you'll get while Selena is at the daycare.
