Reading and More

On Monday morning I truly had no idea what to do for our reading. Since I have caught Selena working on letter blends by herself, I decided to throw a few up on the white board and have her tell me some words that start with them.

We played with this for quite a while and Selena was able to come up with quite a few words for each one. I then pulled two books out of some supplemental reading material we have. Selena has been reading both of these books throughout the day. One is on the easy side, while the other is quite a bit harder. We will sit down with Papa tonight and read them as a family.

Last year Natalie from Mouse Learns Mouse Grows sent Selena a Gifted & Talented Reading, Writing, and Math workbook.

Last year Selena wasn’t as interested in working through this workbook though. She did a few pages, but then it was set aside. I pulled it back out this year and have it sitting with the rest of her work alone things. Selena grabs it out every so often and does do a few pages on her own. She surprises me some days when I open it up to find she has actually drawn a cat or something that I didn’t know she could draw. Today was a great workbook day, she did several pages by herself while I worked in the kitchen.

She was so engrossed in what she was doing that when I asked her to smile for a picture, this is what I got.

I love it when Selena discovers old things and has so much more enthusiasm over them due to her maturity and level of growth. With that said, I have to add, just because your child maybe doesn’t engage in something when it is first introduced, don’t toss it aside thinking this is not going to work, you never know when they will pick it up and absolutely love it.

  1. I am glad that Selena likes this book now. We have the same experience with many materials - the interest is renewed when she is ready for it.

  2. Sounds like mostly all you need to do is supply her with lots and lots of books. :)

  3. Wow! I'm so impressed with how well she's doing with working alone. THat's a skill my kids need to work on.

I'm sorry I've been rather random in commenting lately, it's been one of those seasons that seem super busy and I have no idea why.
