Homeschool Journal #7

The Homeschool Mother's Journal
It has been so long since I wrote a Homeschool Journal post. I actually had to go back and see when it was, can you believe it was June 13th? Well, I am back now and ready to start getting back into the swing of things.

In my life this week… For me this week has come with many changes, back to school, planning meetings, and now the possibility of a leadership position at church has left me fulfilled and very peaceful this week. I still look around our new house everyday and realized just how blessed we truly are to have the opportunity to live here. While it meant that I wasn’t able to be a TOS crew member this year, I do believe God’s timing was the best. I am very happy to be back out in the country, country living just suits me perfectly fine. I realize with the time of year, I will not truly appreciate every aspect of country living until next year when we can truly enjoy all this land. The planning process though has been fun.

In our homeschool this week… Selena was thrilled to be back in school this week. We are revisiting Progressive Phonics, a good review and brush up on our skills will not hurt one bit. Considering we first started working through Progressive Phonics when Selena was 2 years old, she barely remembers any of the material, though she never forgot the skills she learned it. It is fun to watch how now she can read all the little books all on her own instead of just the word groups. She insisted on adding sight word work or flash cards to her reading program this year, since most of her friends who are public schooled always talks about them. Funny thing is though she already knows over 75% of them. I am adding new words not on the list of sight words, just to increase her reading vocabulary. Math still continues to be her least favorite subject, but we have continued to build upon the number line with simple addition and subtraction. I do believe we will be exploring story problems this year though since the addition and subtraction facts are quickly becoming memorized. We are having fun exploring our new world, looking at hay, watching the horses and all the new little discoveries like snakes.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share… It is so easy for us to get wrapped up in making sure we teach by the book, but if there is one piece of advice I can share with everyone is remember to give time everyday for your child to explore the questions, and discoveries that they truly find interesting, rather it be through play, or an extension study, train them that learning takes shape in many forms.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing… I am getting very excited to go see many of my Aunts and Uncles that I haven’t seen in sometime.

My favorite thing this week was… Selena unpacking a box of our books after she finally got tired of being told not to stand on it in order to reach higher on the book shelves. Hey, great problem solving!

Things I’m working on… Still organizing and unpacking from the move.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

I just love how she can move so freely from the little girly girl getting into my lipstick and make up to the tom boyish farm girl needing to explore hay.

  1. It's good to see that you are so excited about your new home. I totally agree with you about the importance of following child's questions rather than teaching from the book.

  5. I love this link up. I really need to join in.

My boys love story problems in math and actually fight to get to do them. Which rather cracks me up. I bet Selena will love them too.
