Book Review and Give a way

It is no surprise to many of my followers that I think writing is a very important skill that we can teach our children. I don’t mean the art of just being able to write our alphabet, sign their name, but the art of creating their own thoughts, feelings, and stories and getting them written down on paper. While technology is a huge tool today in many fields, I feel to even be a successful writer with todays technology we still need to know how to use paper and a pencil. I have come across many blogs by young adults and teens, that made me just cringe over the lack of grammar, spelling (even with spell check) and just the lack of knowing how to put our thoughts into an orderly fashion that is easily read. With that said I have often asked what is it that our children are missing, why can’t they write?

When I was invited to Review 500 Writing Prompts For Kids, By Bryan Cohen I couldn’t resist. "Author Bryan Cohen has written four books including 500 Writing Prompts for Kids, 1,000 Creative Writing Prompts, Writer on the Side: How to Write Your Book Around Your 9 to 5 Job, and a collection of essays on writing called Sharpening the Pencil. He is working on his first novel. He lives in Chicago, Illinois."

This truly is a manual giving parents some interesting topics, with questions that can be used to prompt writing exercises from our children. He writes a little bit about why children should learn to write. I related with how schools use to use dictation and copy work along with integrated story writing to promote writing skills. It does appear to me that this is becoming a lost art, and I know it is mostly in due to the technology we have today. While I know that I use a lot of technology for writing now, I truly think the processing of the thoughts come from my learning how to write them on paper years ago. I hope to share with Selena the joy of writing her thoughts out on paper, while she explores her creativity.

The book is a compile of questions that one can ask their children to promote writing. These are broke down into subsections by topic, imagination, relationships, activities, only to list a few. I would recommend this book especially if you are struggling to figure out some creative ways to get your children to write. I know his list has give me some great ideas to use in Selena’s beginning story making and has helped to increase her story making. The format of his book will allow for young students as well as the older student in promoting the creative juices needed not only to write but to start thinking towards blogging.

I recommend this book if you are looking for ideas to promote more creative writing from your children. You can purchase the book from Amazon here. You can choose from two formats, Kindle is $2.99 or Paperback is $6.99.

" Author Bryan Cohen is doing a giveaway of his book 500 Writing Prompts for Kids for the next week along with a grand prize drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card! Simply post your e-mail address and you are entered in the drawing for one digital copy of the book on this site (there are over 10 sites involved in the giveaway, with one winner of a book per site). One lucky winner will be picked from all the sites to win a $50 Amazon gift card. If Bryan's book, 500 Writing Prompts for Kids reaches the top 500 in sales this week, he will add another $50 Amazon gift card to the drawing. The drawing will occur on June 22nd, so post away! Visit his website at Build Creative Writing Ideas. "

While I received a copy of this book to review I was not compensated in any form. The review is my honest opinion.

  2. Great giveaway. You know my email address :) I like writing prompts at the moment more like oral narrative starters. One day hopefully they will be used as meant.
