What My Child is Reading

Selena and I ventured out to the library on Friday. We had a stack of books that had to go back, and were truly in need of some new reads.

Guinea Guinea Pigs Add Up by Margery Cuyler illustrated by Tracey Campbell Pearson ended up being one of Selena’s favorites. We read it several times then she had Papa read it to her when he got home. It is a story about a classroom that get a guinea pig for a pet. They decided he is lonely and beg the teacher for a second one to keep him company. To their surprise the second one is a female, and the math begins, from 1 – 20, then backwards from 20 – 0. I hope there is a sequence, as then the teacher brings in a rabbit, which just happens to get fatter and fatter….a little cliff hanger. I am looking forward to doing some math extensions this this book.

foreverfriends Forever Friends by Carin Berger, is a cute story about a rabbit and a blue bird who discover the true meaning of friendship. The book goes through the the seasons of change, and show that as seasons come and seasons go, true friendship lasts forever. We enjoyed how the rabbit and bird played, then missed each other during Winter, they longed to be together again. Then come spring the fun began again as these two friends were reunited.

DogfishDog Fish by Gillian Shields illustrated by Dan Taylor was another hit with Selena. It is a story about a little boy who decides he needs a dog. His mom asks him why he needs a dog when he has a fish. The little boy begins to list all the things that a dog can do. Finally his mom says “If you can’t have what you want, then maybe you can begin to like what you have.” This sets the little boy off into a world of turning his fish into what he wants it to be that’s right a DogFish. We had a lot of fun with this book.

  1. All three books sound like great reads and probably will be hits here too. Berger is such a great illustrator - I have to look for that book for my own enjoyment as well. Thanks for joining WMCIR!
