Math Links/Guinea Pig Math

You probably expected after I reviewed this book on Saturday that we would do some math with it. Selena really likes this book, and we had so much fun actually playing with the math in this book.

I took squares of card stock and numbered them to represent our guinea pigs. We started with 0 and added them as the story in the book said.

100_3751We worked all the way up to 20 and Selena took time to count them all. We then started taking them away one by one, as the students were able to take them home.

100_3752  100_3755 When we were finished, Selena spent a long time recounting the cards from 1 to 20, then from 20 to 0.

As we were doing this I realized that this would be a great book to work out with an older child, when you stop to break it down like this:

  • We start with 1 guinea pig and add another one they have three.
  • So one is a male
  • Then these 5 have 15 more, ok now how many does each female have, or how many males do we have if each one would have the same number of babies?

Beings that is way over Selena’s head we did not break it down to figure that out, but you better believe one day we will!

I am linking this to Joyful Learner.

  1. Oh so tempting to sit here and figure it out. But, I really don't need to try and do that. Really, I don't.

  2. Sounds like a great activity for this book. Your suggested extension made me laugh - I can just imagine all the questions Anna would ask about that.

  3. Another great book to look up! Thanks for sharing!
