It’s been awhile since we have played with any science experiments. The other night Selena kept asking for baking soda. It took me a while to figure out what she was wanting baking soda for. Then it dawned on me that we had watched an experiment on making a volcano. Since I didn’t have quite everything to make a volcano, I thought we would have some color fun.
We used baking soda, vinegar, and food coloring. I used a stir straw to pipe the vinegar onto the baking soda. At first Selena was not that excited, until I added a little blue food coloring so she could really see what was happening.
Now it was time for the fun to begin. We tried a little yellow food coloring and made green, then a little red. Selena thought the red was the neatest.
She kept asking for more and more. She finally grabbed the vinegar from me and poured all of it in the little dish, this is what we ended up with at the end. I liked the way you were actually able to see all the colors, red, yellow, blue, and orange.
We didn’t quite stop there, as Selena then decided to really give this a good shake or two until she got a little blue stain on her hands.
She was a little surprised that all her colors had blended together into this glob of almost black color. 
She cried a bit about the blue stain, but I used this to reinforce this is why we follow directions. When Mama says “NO” she means “NO!”
No, Selena did not understand the full concept as to why the vinegar made the baking soda fizz but she had fun seeing all the different colors and called it her Tie Dye Experiment.
What fun! My boys can play with baking soda and vinegar with food coloring for hours. They don't mind if they get coloring on them, so I just make sure they play outside with it. LOL
ReplyDeleteFun! You can assure Selena, I have dyed my hands blue many (many) times, and they always return to normal after a day, or two :)
ReplyDeleteI, too, have had blue hands - food coloring is not easy to wash off!!
ReplyDeleteMy kids always enjoy playing with baking soda and vinegar. Sometimes I sprinkle baking soda in the sink and let them pour in some vinegar and clean the sink - they think this is great and I end up with a shiny sink!!!
That's my kids automatic go to for any solution.
ReplyDeleteMy kids are learning that too, that when Mom says "No," there is a reason for it. They don't like learning it either.
My daughter loves playing with colors but she hates when she gets stains on her hand.
ReplyDeleteThe food coloring addition was a good idea. Colorful things are always better (except hands, apparently).
ReplyDeleteOh boy, food coloring does stain... as I found out the hard way. This is a fun experiment. We did something similar when we did a homemade playdoh once. We put a few drops of two different colors into the middle of the playdoh, and then Anna was amazed to see how all playdoh turned green or orange as we (well, mostly I) kneaded it. That's when I found out just how much food coloring stains :)
