stART/ Autumn Zigzag

We have plenty of Autumn books on reserve at the library, we just don’t know when they will come in so we can enjoy them. In the meantime though Selena’s High Five magazine came in with plenty of cute Autumn stories and activities to read and do. We read a story titled Autumn Zigzag by Michael J. Rosen. The story is about all the different zigzag shapes of autumn from the zippers on jackets, to candy corn.

I gave Selena orange, yellow and red construction paper and asked her to cut as many pieces of zigzag shapes she could. We then took a piece of black construction paper folded it in half and glued her cut out pieces to the front.

I showed Selena how we were making our own Autumn card and asked her what she wanted it to say inside. She decided and set to work with white chalk to write the words as I helped her with the spelling.

Now she is just trying to decide if she wants to send this card to her Uncle TJ or keep it for herself.

Come on over to A Mommy’s Adventure to see more Story + Art = A Great Start!

I read the first book but not the second. Pigasso and Mootise sounds interesting! What a great idea for a collage and introducing picasso's work. I love how he has his legs crossed while studying the picture. He looks really absorbed.

There were different periods of my life when I was fascinated with different artists. It began with Renoir then moved onto Picasso (his biography was fascinating and disturbing), Van Gogh, Matisse (saw his collection at MoMa where I fell in love with his cut-outs), Cassat, Miro, Rothko, and then finally Calder. It's kind of how people remember different music for different periods in their life. Picasso was my most turbulent times. :)

Excellent books and very nice activity for Picasso. I love art myself, but I admit that I am not a big fan of anything beyond impressionist period. One exception - Marc Chagall, a native of my own country Belarus.

There are some great picture story books for kids about artist out there, don't you think? We have borrowed books on Firda Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe and Princess has really loved them!

I ha ve just finished chopping up my magazines for pictures, but will have to try and find something to see if we can try these face collages too a I can imagine that they would be lots of fun. A Mr Potato Head on paper :)
