Homeschool Hop #10

This weeks theme at the Homeschool Hop hosted by Kylie at Our Worldwide Classroom is to answer one question:

What is your favorite subject to teach or learn with your children?

I have to say my favorite subject or subjects to teach and learn with Selena are Geography and History. As a family we are able to enjoy exploring the world, the history buried within our world, and our own backyard.

I myself always loved these subjects in school and always found so many interesting nonfiction and fiction books based on the blend of geography and history. Coming from a family of pioneers I have had a great passion for following their paths from Sweeden to where they homesteaded, a quest for how our family ended up where they finally did. I feel that within these two subjects one can teach so many other subjects at the same time, from reading through literature, math, science, and just the desire to want to learn. I know that Selena wakes up every morning and the first words out of her mouth is “Let’s talk about something new today.” She can’t get enough of her little geography and history lessons. We are able to go out and explore with hands on, to being here at home looking at maps, making maps, to learning facts from everything from books to the Internet.

We have mapped several States so far, and continue to work on these as we go along. We are making a wonderful scrapbook that I hope proves to be the foundation for all of our Geography and History lessons from here on. When we finish the States we will look at the Continents and different Countries. We have taken a lot of time here of late to just explore our State. From lighthouses, volcanoes, and yet to come rivers.

Many of you know I started a postcard exchange at Christmas time. This proved to be a great success and I discovered many mom’s who participated with Selena and I, as well as using this in their own schools. I have now introduced a weekly linky for all Geography/History posts. You are all welcome to link up at anytime that you teach a little Geography or History. Just keep an eye open for my button to appear every Wednesday, and no you do not have to participate in the postcard exchange to link up.

I am linking this up to Our Worldwide Classroom.

  9. I'm such a sucker for history, that's probably why I minored in it, rather than something more useful to an elementary teacher.
