What We Are Reading

Selena continued to enjoy all of her books from last week,  tossed in several from our own library and reread all of her High 5 magazines. Natalie you will get a kick out of this first book, I know!

When Selena woke up from her nap the other day, I just popped around the corner and said Peek-a-boo sweetie! She thought I said Tick-a-boo, and giggled “Mama”. She got curious and asked me how to play Tick-a-boo, I corrected her and said no it is Peek-a-boo. She had the funniest look on her face and said “Peek-a-boo? How do you play that?” I laughed and explained it was a game much like hide and seek that we played when she was a baby. She still could not comprehend how hiding my face behind my hands or a blanket even remotely resembled hide and seek. I remembered that Natalie had sent her this book called My Peekaboo Fun Learning Words, so I grabbed it and handed it to her and pointed out that that was the title of the book. Selena spent the next half hour still trying to figure out Peek-a-boo, but she read the entire book several times.

peek Natalie sent us the one with the cow on it. These are great board books that have pictures hidden under a flap with the name of the picture. I would recommend this book for any young child first learning to read.

flipflapfly Flip, Flap, Fly! by Phyles Root was a book that Selena picked up at the library. It is a cute story about babies, starting out with a baby bird. The story builds upon a new baby that each baby animal finds, ending with a baby child, discovering a baby bird. It is a cute read and the illustrations are great. It’s an easy read, so Selena was able to read quite a bit of the book on her own, but really enjoyed curling up on my lap to hear it over and over again.

allgodscritters All God’s Critters is based on a song by Bill Staines titled, “All God’s Critters Got a Place in the Choir.” This is a great book for teaching concepts like pitch. The words to the song go, “Some sing low, Some sing higher, Some sing out loud…” It also goes into concepts of bottom, middle and top. Don’t let the title fool you, as it truly does not talk about God all the way through the book, only in the title, this book is about animals singing in a choir with their different voices loud and soft and all in between. It is a cute book and a clever song.

littlebittymousieLittle Bitty Mousie by Jim Aylesworth is a story about a little mouse who snoops around the house after a family is asleep at night. She sees so many things beginning from A to Z. The night is young and holds an entire alphabet to discover. We enjoyed the book, it isn’t as simple as the first ABC books are and introduces words such as Dishes, Eggshells, and Ketchup. I liked the book as it took the alphabet to the next level from apple, boat, cat…. I highly recommend this book for those little ones who are looking to increase their vocabulary and word awareness.
