My Little Teacher

Selena has always been quite strong willed, knowing just what she wants and how she wants it. This goes for what she wants to learn and how she wants to learn it as well. This week I have let her take so much control in this area. We’ve had so much fun letting her guide us through her learning process.

Selena is writing more and more, but she desires to be the teacher and have us as her students. I have spent countless hours allowing Selena to use my finger as her pencil on her Glo Doodle Pad. She is teaching me to write not only letters but numbers. She has guided my fingers to make the letters A, B, C, D, H, I, L, M, N, O, Q, R, S, T, Z. Along with the numbers, 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, and 10. She has thrown in a few lower case letters as well.

She is also becoming quite the back seat driver. Yesterday, on our way to town she informed me every time there was a traffic light as to when to stop and when to go. There is however, one traffic light that is set for West bound traffic to continue to go with a yellow flashing light, unless you are making a left hand turn then you have the normal traffic light. When we got to this intersection Selena spotted the red light for the left turn lane and freaked out yelling at the top of her lungs, “Red Means Stop!” She repeated this getting louder and more intense as I proceeded on through the intersection. Yes, she thought I ran a red light and quickly informed me that I would be going to jail. It is beyond me where she got the idea that I would go to jail for running a red light but that is what she told me.

We were having problems with Selena having accidents for a week or so. Last night she informed Papa that when he is home he has to take her potty or she will potty on the floor. Michael and I were wondering why she was doing this, well now we know, she was desiring his attention. The only problem with this is there are times when Papa just doesn’t hear her. Isn’t that just typical for a man to be able to shut out the voice of a female? He is learning though. I believe this is more of her wanting him to come home and spend time with her. He is good about spending time with her but sometimes needs reminders that she wants more attention then just what she gets from him at the dinner table. Michael is just a man who can’t sit still for two seconds. He can always find something that he has to do, or thinks he has to do, so Selena has been rebelling over Papa not spending the time with her.

I love weeks like this when we are just able to let Selena take the reigns and with our guidance be that free spirit that she is.

  1. We try to let Crumpet lead us like this too. I think it gives them such a sense of pride and empowerment to be able to teach us about the things they know. Of course, now he has announced that he knows everything which is becoming a problem! :)
He is also a back seat driver and the occasional stop sign set at an angle will send him screaming because he thinks I forgot to stop...

  3. It sounds like Selena is preparing to be a good law abiding citizen - you've got to love a three year old!

  4. My kids tell me not to run red lights either and direct me when to stop and go.

  5. This is interesting that Selena wants so much attention from Papa - I hope that he is prepared to spend more time with her. Anna is most difficult when she has both of us at home - she then really doesn't know what to do with herself. And it's great that you allow her to take the lead in her learning process. I am trying to do it to the best of my ability, but sometimes it can be very frustrating.
