Geography/History Lesson 6

postcardexchange

This week we look at our own State, Washington. We got this postcard from a family who lives here in Washington, their blog is Homeschooling With Love. The unique part of this postcard exchange is that this family does not live that far from us. We have visited their town often.

We looked up the State of Washington in my big Atlas book. We discovered that it is located in the upper left hand corner of the the United States, Alaska is the only other State that is further North. Washington is bordered by Canada to the North, Idaho to the East, Oregon to the South and the Pacific Ocean to the West.

page1 Selena then located our State on a blank outline map of the United States and since our State color is Green, she colored it in with green. She did a good job with her coloring today!

I had printed off just a small picture of a blank outline map of Washington State itself, along with the State flag and seal. Selena again colored the State Green. We examined the flag and seal and Selena pointed out that they look alike. We then went online and looked up the State of Washington to find out about all the different symbols of our State. We made tags for most of them and glued all these items on a page for Selena’s notebook. On the back of this page we made a nice pocket to keep the postcard in and anything else we should come across.

These were put all together and placed in side protector shields and placed in her Geography Notebook. We will revisit Washington State and make discover some of the current events of today for fun and so Selena can always look back to what was happening here when we first started this notebook.

We would love to have you share what you are teaching in your home as far as Geography or History. Link your posts up below and share in on the fun. Remember it is still not to late to get in on the wonderful experience of exchanging postcards and getting a little mail for your child. If you would like to exchange postcards with us please leave me a note letting me know along with a way to get a hold of you to exchange personal information.
