Postcard Exchange/Geography Lesson #1

US Map

We spent this first week finding our State on the map. We took a look at Washington State, the bordering States, The Pacific Ocean, The Capital and where we live.

You can see by clicking on the map above and enlarging it, that where we live is represented by a red dot. Montesano, the town we live in is truly 40 miles from the Capital of Washington State, Olympia and 40 miles from the Ocean.

We located some of the larger cities on the map, such as Seattle, Spokane, as well as looking at where Mount Rainier is, and Mount St. Helens.

Selena had fun locating her home town on the map, and I believe while at first she was a little overwhelmed with the concept of seeing the United States, once we narrowed in on our State, and really started looking at it she became excited. I hope to capture some pictures of her at the map next week, but this week it took so much of my time just getting her acquainted with this new concept that the camera did not come out.

I also hope to start looking in more depth to the postcards we have received, and seeing the excitement with Selena as she sees these precious pieces of mail again.

Feel free to use my US map and link up anything that you and your kids are doing in geography.

  1. How exciting! I'm glad that she had fun learning about her state. :-) Dawson is still too young to be learning stuff like this but we have started collecting postcards. I'll post about the exchange again in the next day or two and then come back and link up. :-)

I look forward to seeing what else you learn about as well.

  4. I totally did not get the geography stuff I wanted to get done this week done. Sigh....... The weather worked against me. I was going to have us interview our neighbors, but the weather and the various appointments this week worked against us.
So, I've been curious. I always hear Seattle is all rain and fog, do you have that problem where you live?

  5. This is a great lesson! I'm going to start working on weekly geography lessons this week. We're going to start with Washington since that's where our first postcard was from. :-)
