What We've Been Reading

Like most of you we read so many books in our house. This week though I have been introducing Selena to some of my favorite poems. I have always loved poetry as a child, and have notebooks of my own poetry that I have written. Both the books I shared with Selena are books that I used as a child.

I received this book when I was about 6 years old and have shared it with both my older children and now with Selena. "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Louis Stevenson has wonderful illustrations and such wonderful poetry about nature. Two of my favorite poems are, "At the Sea Side" and "Where The Boats Go"
This set of 10 books has been in my family for as long as I can remember, I don't believe they are still in print, one might find them on Ebay or in an antique store. "The Young Folks Shelf of Books" Published by Collier has an array of poetry, riddles, rhymes, and short stories. Selena enjoys the poetry at this point but I am sure as she grows and becomes an independent reader she will get much pleasure out of reading all that these books have to offer.

  1. It's great that you can introduce the books of your youth to Selena. My husband has a lot of German books that he had when he was a child. I still hope that she will learn German one day :)

  2. Robert Louis Stevenson is one of my favorite authors. I know I've heard of a Child's Garden of Verse, I'll have to look for this at our library. You have some wonderful books to share with Selena! BTW, I checked out "A Child's Book of Virtues" by Bill Bennett, it's a little over Matthew's head right now, but in a year or two I think I'll get it again. It's definitely one I want to share with him! Thanks for all your great suggestions!
