"D" and More

We had a lot of fun this week. We were studying the letter "D". I had planned on going in a totally different direction with our Unit Study, which I am happy to say I did get worked in through stART, so my idea didn't go totally out the door. Selena has really started growing in her pre-writing skills, and her desire to put words together. I haven't really focused on actually putting words together but this week Selena was making words left and right, so I just went with the flow.

Our Bible study was on David and Goliath, Selena always gets very excited about Bible time and prays daily always thanking God for the Bible. Usually after I read the Bible story Selena just can't stop talking about the story, the characters, and the memory verse. After I read David and Goliath though Selena just sat there looking at me with a blank look on her face, so I knew she took nothing away from the Bible story. We decided to try our first lapbook and see how this type of art would help Selena. Let me just say it was a success.
Selena just loved the fact that she made her own book. She pulls it out and tells the story of David and Goliath at least once if not twice a day.

We didn't go real elaborate with the lapbook, I didn't want to overwhelm Selena's senses so we kept it very simple with a lot of her favorite activities of cutting and gluing.

For Math this week, we reinforced her skills of counting to 20. Somebody gave Selena a toy called Mathematical Monkey, I have never seen one like it before so it must be fairly old. Selena use to play with it all the time but had stuffed it in her toy box until this week. She pulled it out and as soon as I heard it, I was a bit surprised. It is a red monkey with a yellow belly, on the belly are the numbers 1 through 10. When you turn it on, it starts presenting simple addition and subtraction facts. Actually Selena does really well with it so long as I am helping her figure out the answer. I usually do the math problems by showing her on my fingers for example 3+2 I hold up three fingers on my left hand and tell her we are going to add 2 more, then hold up 2 fingers on my right hand, she counts how many fingers I have up and then pushes the letter 5 on her monkey.
For phonics, Selena lost interest in the Progressive Phonics so I pulled my felt board out and our lower case letters. She had fun using the letters to not only practice the sounds, but show me that she could actually make words with them. We took a lot of walks this week, I want to squeeze in as many outdoor activities as I can because once it starts raining here it won't stop until next summer. Selena started to really examine all the street signs and was very successful most of the time at sounding out the words on each sign. If she didn't find signs she found words on the sides of cars or trucks to try to sound out.
Over all we had a very good and fun week. Selena is growing with leaps and bounds and I look forward to all that is yet to come.

  2. I love your mini-lapbook. It's a lot less overwhelming than many others I've seen, and it makes me want to try and make one too. I am just trying to figure out it's size - is it folded half of printer page or is it more than that?

  3. I love that you used David and Goliath for the letter /d/.

I often read to my 4 year old, and I often get blank stares back when I ask her what the story is about. Oh well. It does get better. :)

    Loved your little lapbook.
