Homeschool Journal #8

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week…

It has been a good week, though this is proving to be a busy month. I was once again reminded that it is time to prepare for Autumn, and our weather is quickly changing bringing about that feel in the air. While we are still enjoying Summer activities, it is very obvious that our mornings are starting with a heavier foggy mist and the days are a bit cooler. I do love Autumn but to be quite honest am not ready to let go of Summer just yet. While I know many of my readers have been blasted with very HOT and some very CRAZY weather, we here had about 3 weeks of sweet summer heat. My heart has been heavy for those who are in the drought stricken states, and those in the path of all the destructive storms. I believe this year may truly go down in history for one of the oddest years in Summer history.

In our homeschool this week…

We had a lot of fun in school this week. Selena has settled in very nicely to our new routine and materials. She is so eager to continue on with all her subjects, reading, math. science and has eagerly been begging to learn to write. She proudly announces to anyone who asks if she is in school, “Yes, I am. I am homeshooled and I love it!” Even with being able to see the school field not far from us and the opportunity to watch the soccer camps bringing in so many children, she insists she just wants to be homeschooled.

I am inspired by…

I have to say here I have been moved and inspired by God’s grace. I truly wondered with the move and the extra expenses of closing bills how we would purchase what I felt we would need to fill in the gaps in our curriculum. Though I didn’t feel we would have to purchase a lot of books or spend a lot of money, I was truly relieved while unpacking how much curriculum I found that had been given to us, that I truly will be able to use, not only for this year but for several years to come.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

We are planning on going with the local homeschool group for a day in the park. I am looking forward to getting more involved with the group this year, considering that I feel we are moving into the official homeschool years.

My favorite thing this week was…

Introducing Selena to our math buddies and beginning to show her how these two little men from an old game of hers will be teaching her math. The sparkle in her eye and the intense concentration on how these two little characters were working so hard to teach her math concepts was just adorable. While this was a last minute thought on my part, I believe it will be a worth while adventure through math.

Things I’m working on…

Organizing our school area. While we do learning throughout the house, with no real designated classroom, we do have a beautiful built in desk near the bookshelves perfect for much of the work we do. Since we moved in that area became the catch all place for the little things that came out of boxes and bins that we were not sure where to put at this point. It isn’t horrible, but I do need to gain the motivation to just get in and tackle that pile. Also I have discovered I do need to get an easel for our dry erase board and charts, as we do not have the open wall space in our new home for all these things.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

Selena just having fun, spending hours playing with these two plastic bottles. The above picture is from a magic trick she performed for me, making the snake disappear, and the reappear. The sweetness of a child’s imagination, and the materials she finds just within the home.

  1. I think once our weeks are calmed down I'm going to be joining you in this meme. It's so calming and reflective. Things which I am not.
