Charts

After watching an episode of Sid the Science Kid about charts, I thought it would be fun to make one of our own. I just took a piece of printer paper and drew the chart, then took colored beads and put a handful in a dish. I also gathered up matching colored crayons.

100_4580 I marked the first squares with the different colors to represent the different colors of beads we had, then numbered across the top of the page 1 to 10. I gave Selena the bowl of beads and told her she had to separate the beads according to color.

100_4582 When she was finished all that was left to do was count each color, going to our chart she then put an X in the square that marked the number of beads of that color, then I had her draw a line from where I had labeled the colors across to her X.

100_4584 After this was finished I took the beads away and just looking at her chart she had to answer three questions:

  1. Which color had the most beads?
  2. Which color had the least beads?
  3. Which two colors had the same amount?

What did Selena think of this activity? I think she liked it, enough to put on her bunny ears and wear a huge smile!

  1. My boys like to do that with Skittles and M&M's. They know they get to keep the candy afterwards, so that is motivtion for them. :)

  3. You should check out if your library has Great Graph Contest by Loreen Leedy. Anna adored that book, and we did some charts based on the book too. Last picture is super cute!

  4. I'm used to doing that with M&Ms like Phyllis, but great use of things on hand.

My kids always love that type of hands on thing.
