What My Child is Reading

Like most libraries our library has used book sales, I never seem to make it to them though. I was excited when I discovered that they are now offering books for sale on their website. I have been wanting to add to my secret library and also get Selena a new book or two for her library.

whateverweather Whatever the Weather by Karen Wallace is a Level 1 reader. One thing I have always had a struggle with was finding just the right book about weather to meet what is really happening in our neighborhood. Selena just like the little boy pictured is forever staring out the window. This book covers every possible weather condition, from snow, thunder, rain, and warm sunny days. I like the way it explains the different weather, with concepts on why we have lightning, yet it is simple enough for the young mind to understand.

busybuzzy Busy Buzzy Bee by Karen Wallace, another Level 1 reader, it is just that all about bees. We discovered this summer that Selena does not understand the difference between a fly and a bee, as it soon became apparent when she would panic over a fly getting into our home, yet while at my bothers never gave the bees another thought. This book does a very good job of covering every aspect of the bee. While we do not have a huge bee problem here, like warmer climates, I do want Selena to understand the difference.

creepycrawlies Creepy Crawlies by Peter Scott, is a Lift the flap book about bugs. I am not a huge fan of Lift the flap books since too often then not our flaps come up missing, but I really like the way this book looks at a various range of creepy crawlies and goes into some great simple descriptions of how each one lives.

mindyourmanners Mind Your Manners, Biscuit by Alyssa Satin Capucilli was one Biscuit book we have never seen on the shelves of the library. Anyone who follows my blog knows that Selena loves the Biscuit books, so I couldn’t resist getting this one for her. It is a cute story about teaching Biscuit manners through a day out and about. I like the way Biscuit reflects the mirrored image of a child and is being taught the same manners we try reinforce in Selena. I should add that like all Biscuit books, Selena enjoys the story, while it is introducing new words to her, she is so close to reading it independently. She is so thrilled to have a Biscuit book that she doesn’t have to take back to the library.

  1. I was going to say she should be reading them on her own any day now, and then you said that about the Biscuit books.

I'll have to find the weather book we read recently, my kids loved it, and it did some great explanations.

  2. Thanks for joining WMCIR! We read the first book on your list, and Anna also enjoyed learning about all kinds of weather that can happen in one place. She wanted to know why is it that we never get snow. Anna is not a big fan of bugs, but neither is any of us. I leave it to school to teach her more about them.

  3. Come up missing is a very kind way to put it, about the flap books. In our house, the flaps get mercilessly torn out :)

  4. I don't think I've seen that Biscuit book at my library either. I'll have to get more weather books, though. My 4-year-old was hoping for a tornado last week so we could hide in the pantry.

  5. M has just gotten into Biscuit books and I think my kids could use a book on manners so thanks for the recommendation! The other books all sound good too. I may look for that weather one.

  6. Our library has its own used bookstore where they sell old library books as well as books that are donated. I have bought about 80 percent of her books from that place!

My daughter has been so great with books, she has never puposely ripped one and I started giving her paper paged books when she was about 12 months. she did have book that she was supposed to pull and tug on and that one got accidently ripped.
