Art Box 1st Attempt

paint palette

I thought I would post this early, even though the carnival really won’t be up and running until Monday. I hoped that some of you with younger children would get some clues as to what might or might not work with your children. Selena is 35 months old and I believe we went a little overboard with items in her art box.

I put in the usual art supplies that we normally use, crayons, markers, colored pencils, scissors, card stock, glue, stickers, and construction paper.

At first Selena seemed fine with it and experimented with a little bit of everything. I could tell she wasn’t quite sure what to do first or next.

100_1765She quickly went for the stickers!

Then nothing was safe, she decided to dig through the box and pull everything out. She was now over stimulated and jumped from one item to the next. At this point caps came off all the markers, crayons were dumped out, colored pencils went flying, paper was all over, she tried cutting the pencils and crayons with the scissors, she ate the glue. Her hands were working faster then I could keep up with picking everything up off the floor. It was one huge fun for all!

100_1768 I think that she got more art on herself then her paper!

Out of all the mess this is what we ended up with.

If I should ever try this again I will not give her so many items, but only give her a couple. She truly was over stimulated! I think if this is your first attempt at art this way you might want to consider your child’s abilities and choose a few items at a time. Selena informed me after this experience, that her pretty artist work was the art work we do together then went around and pointed it all out to me, our flag, our Thanksgiving hand prints, etc.

  1. I love your art box! OK, I just took a picture of Joe yesterday with marker ALL over his hands and he even applied it to his lips and nose on purpose:-). It was hilarious!

You are super and so are your ideas!

  2. I like this Art Box idea. We have all of our art supplies in a huge basket on the floor of the kitchen, so it's always accessible. But I think maybe a small box that has just a few items that are changed on a regular basis is a great idea. I may try it with M in a couple weeks, after vacation.

  4. I had to chuckle reading this. At least Selena did something. I know that Anna would probably use all that bounty to make some sort of cooking game in her kitchen. Every time I tried to give her a set of material in the past she fully expected it to come with guided instruction. I plan to do an Art Box tonight, and I will learn from your experience.

  5. Yeah, I've noticed that if you put too much at once it just goes all over.
